The coastline here is the Gulf of Trieste on the northern Adriatic. The Trieste Karst (Carso) plateau rises immediately inland, with limestone terrain, sinkholes and local vineyards (Vitovska and other Carso wines). The Miramare area and its marine reserve (Riserva Naturale Marina di Miramare) lie on the north-west side of the gulf and protect a strip of sea and coastal parkland. The area is subject to the bora, a strong northeasterly wind that affects weather and sailing. Trieste is the nearest city of size, offering a commercial port, ferry connections, a railway station, university-level services and a historic central district (including Miramare castle and San Giusto hill within the city's limits). The Slovenian port town of Koper and Slovenia’s short Adriatic coast are immediately across the border and regularly relevant for shopping and services. No alpine ski lifts are within about 15 km; Julian Alps ski areas are farther inland and require a longer drive.
