The cluster sits on the Marano Lagoon, a broad brackish lagoon of channels, saltmarsh and fishing valleys on the northern Adriatic. The Stella River reaches the lagoon nearby. The Riserva Naturale Regionale Foci dello Stella lies within this lagoon system. Lignano Sabbiadoro is the nearest larger resort town, with beaches, marinas and services; Palmanova and Udine are the nearest larger inland centres for wider shopping and administration. The area is known for lagoon fishing, shellfish and the traditional casoni of the lagoon.
