Coastal plain on the Tyrrhenian Sea with sandy beaches and a stretch of seaside pine plantations around Marina di Montalto. The area includes a significant coastal industrial/energy complex (large thermoelectric power station and related infrastructure; a planned nuclear project was never completed). The hinterland is low-lying agricultural reclamation land used for arable crops and horticulture. The Etruscan necropolis and museum at Tarquinia (part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing “Etruscan necropolises of Cerveteri and Tarquinia”) lie roughly 10–12 km to the south. No mountains or ski lifts are within the immediate 15 km radius; coastal landscape is the dominant feature. Nearest town with regular rail connections and a wider range of services is Tarquinia; Viterbo and Civitavecchia are the larger urban centres at greater distance.
