The area around
Location score 84/100Tarquinia sits on a tuff ridge above the coastal plain and contains the Necropolis of Monterozzi; the painted Etruscan tombs there are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Etruscan Necropolises of Cerveteri and Tarquinia'. The town fronts the Tyrrhenian Sea and has a seaside strip (Lido di Tarquinia) and adjacent coastal plain. The Marta river reaches the sea nearby and the coastal wetlands and salt pans by the river mouth are protected as the Saline di Tarquinia nature reserve. The town hosts archaeological collections and displays (Museo Nazionale Tarquinense) and Etruscan monuments concentrated in and around the urban area. Within about 15 km are small coastal towns and an agricultural plain, including Montalto di Castro to the northwest and a string of beaches and seaside settlements along the plain. No significant mountains or ski facilities lie within the 15 km radius. The area is known for its Etruscan archaeology, coastal beaches and coastal wetland birdlife.
