The Ionian Sea is a few kilometres away, and the Strait of Messina is nearby on the opposite side of the southern Calabrian tip. Much of the inland mountain area falls within Aspromonte National Park. The nearest city of size is Reggio Calabria, which has the main range of services, rail connections and ferry links across the strait. This part of Calabria is known for steep dry hills, bergamot cultivation in the wider Reggio area, and Greek-Calabrian settlements farther inland in the Aspromonte foothills.
