The area sits in the hills and low ridges at the edge of the Apennines, between the lower Scrivia valley and the first rises toward the Ligurian watershed. The Scrivia river runs nearby, and the landscape around Novi Ligure is a mix of cultivated plains, vineyard and orchard country, and wooded slopes toward Gavi and the Val Borbera side. The nearest larger city is Alessandria, while Novi Ligure itself functions as the main service town for this part of southeastern Piemonte, with rail links, shops and hospitals. Gavi is close by, with its hilltop fort dominating the local landscape. This area is known for Gavi wine and for being a corridor between the Po plain and Genoa.
