Madesimo

The cluster sits in the high Alpine valley of the Spluga (Valle Spluga) in the Lepontine Alps with steep mountain ridges and passes within view. Passo dello Spluga (the Splügen Pass) and the village/reservoir of Montespluga lie within about 15 km to the north; the pass connects this valley with Graubünden in Switzerland. The Liro river runs down the valley through Madesimo and the artificial Lago di Montespluga is on the road up to the pass. Madesimo contains a local ski area with lifts and piste access starting in and above the town; summer marked trails and alpine terrain use the same lift network. The nearest town of size is Chiavenna (Valchiavenna), which provides a railway link toward Colico/Milan, shops and health services. The area is used for alpine skiing, mountain hiking and as an access point for cross‑border travel over Passo dello Spluga.
