Steep coastal hills rise quickly inland to the Ligurian Apennines within a few kilometres, with Mediterranean scrub, olive terraces and woodland on the slopes. The Genoa–La Spezia coastal railway runs through the town and provides frequent regional train links along the Riviera. Nearest larger towns within c. 10–12 km are Moneglia (to the east) and Sestri Levante (to the west); Sestri Levante offers a fuller range of shops, services and rail/boat connections. The immediate area is used for seaside tourism, swimming and coastal hiking; longer mountain recreation in the Apennines requires a drive of several dozen kilometres. No national-park or UNESCO designation lies in the immediate 15 km radius of the town.
