The cluster sits in Forio on the island of Ischia (part of the Phlegraean/Campanian archipelago). Monte Epomeo, the island’s central volcanic summit (about 789 m), is within the same island and forms the interior high ground. The island is volcanic and hosts numerous thermal springs and commercial spa parks; several thermal establishments and park-style baths are on the island. Forio contains the La Mortella botanical garden and the Poseidon thermal park at Citara beach. The church known locally as Il Soccorso (Madonna del Soccorso) sits on a Forio promontory. The local coast near Forio combines sandy beaches (Citara and nearby coves) and rocky headlands. Short sea crossings connect to Procida and the small island of Vivara; the island has regular ferry and hydrofoil links to Naples, Pozzuoli and other Campanian ports. The wider island settlement of Ischia Porto/Ischia Ponte (with the Aragonese Castle) is a few kilometres away on the same island. The area is mainly known for its volcanic geology, thermal tourism, botanical gardens and seaside bathing.
