The cluster sits in Pozzuoli on the coast inside the Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei) volcanic area. The Solfatara volcanic crater and fumarolic field are in the local volcanic system. Monte Nuovo, a volcanic cone created in 1538, is part of the nearby relief. Lago Fusaro (Lake Fusaro) and the Casina Vanvitelliana lie on the coast between Pozzuoli and Bacoli. Lago Lucrino is on the southern side of the gulf near Pozzuoli. The Baia archaeological area with submerged Roman remains is on the nearby coastline. Capo Miseno (Cape Miseno) marks the western headland of the gulf. Pozzuoli contains Roman monuments including the Flavian Amphitheatre and the Roman Macellum. Pozzuoli harbour has ferry and hydrofoil connections to the islands of Procida and Ischia. The Campi Flegrei area is volcanically active and subject to bradyseism and monitoring. Naples, the regional capital, lies to the east and provides the main railway station, major hospital facilities and Naples-Capodichino international airport.
