The ancient Greek archaeological site of Metaponto and its long sandy beaches lie on the nearby coast. The Bradano river reaches the sea in this area and drains the surrounding plain. There are no significant mountains or ski lifts within about 15 km; the local landscape is low-lying agricultural and coastal. Metaponto has a railway station on the Jonica (Taranto–Reggio) line and coastal roads connect the area with Taranto and Matera. Pisticci (around 17,000 inhabitants) and other small towns provide local services a few kilometres inland. The area is known for sandy beaches and summer bathing tourism, the archaeological remains of the ancient Greek colony Metapontum, and lowland agriculture.
