The Tyrrhenian coast and the Versilia shoreline (Marina di Massa, beaches and a small port) are immediately adjacent. The Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane lies in the mountains to the north of the town. There are no ski lifts in the Apuan range; the nearest alpine-style ski area is in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines (Abetone), a drive of roughly 1.5–2 hours. The nearby town of Carrara is the local centre for the marble industry and quarrying and is within a few kilometres. The area is known for Carrara (white) marble extraction and for the combination of coastal beaches with steep karst mountains inland.
