Civitella del Tronto

Situated in the northern Abruzzo Apennines at the foot of the Monti della Laga mountain group. The Tronto river and the Tronto valley run close to the town; the settlement overlooks the valley. Parts of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga lie in the surrounding mountains. The area is near the Marche–Abruzzo regional border. The town contains the Fortezza di Civitella del Tronto, a large 16th–19th century fortress and the site of the last Bourbon resistance in 1861. The nearest town of size is Ascoli Piceno (around 11–12 km) with a medieval centre, provincial services and a train station. Nearest organised alpine ski facilities are on the Gran Sasso (Prati di Tivo) rather than immediately adjacent. The nearest coast is the Adriatic Sea.
