Much of the mountain is protected in the Parco Nazionale Museo delle Miniere dell’Amiata and in the wider Monte Amiata forest area. The nearest ski lifts are on Monte Amiata itself, around Prato delle Macinaie and Cantore, a short drive from town. Abbadia San Salvatore is a historic small centre on the mountain, known for the Abbey of San Salvatore and for its former cinnabar mining district. The area is known for chestnuts, woodland, and the volcanic landscape of Amiata.
