The Dolo and Dragone streams cut wooded valleys in this part of the mountain belt. The area is near the Parco regionale dell'Alto Appennino Modenese. The nearest ski area is Piandelagotti, a short drive from Frassinoro, with the larger lifts of the Cimone district farther away around Sestola. The nearest town of some size is Castelnovo ne' Monti on the Emilia side or Pavullo nel Frignano farther north, both with everyday services; Sassuolo and Modena are much farther down on the plain. This part of the Apennines is known for forests, chestnut country, pasture and small mountain villages on the road between the Modenese and Garfagnana sides of the range.
