The Peloritani mountain range rises immediately south of the city, with ridges descending toward the coast. The settlement sits on the Strait of Messina with a coastal frontage and ferry/hydrofoil links across the strait to Villa San Giovanni and services onward to the Aeolian Islands. No national park lies inside a 15 km radius; the Nebrodi Regional Park lies farther inland to the west. There are no local ski lifts; the nearest ski facilities are on Mount Etna and in the Madonie/Nebrodi ranges, all well over an hour's drive. Messina is a regional transport hub with a commercial port and ferry terminal, a mainline railway station and connections to the A20 and A18 motorways. The city hosts the University of Messina and the Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria G. Martino. The Cathedral of Messina (Duomo) has an astronomical clock and the historic centre was largely rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake. The area is characterised by heavy maritime traffic through the Strait of Messina and by historical seismic activity.
