Celico is a small hill town in the upper valley of the Crati river in the province of Cosenza. The surroundings are a mix of cultivated hills, olive groves, chestnut and mixed woodland and small pasture plots typical of the Pre‑Apennine/Apennine foothills of northern Calabria. The Crati river and its tributary streams shape local valleys and roads. The lower foothills that rise toward the Sila plateau lie to the east and northeast; the Sila’s forests and artificial reservoirs are a regional feature reachable on local roads. Cosenza is the nearest city of size and provides the regional hospital, university faculties, a main railway link and larger shops. The town is known as the birthplace of the medieval abbot and mystic Gioacchino (Joachim) da Fiore.
