Appennino Lucano (the Lucanian Apennines) lies inland to the west; the coastal plain separates the town from the mountain massifs. The area is on the Ionian Sea (Gulf of Taranto). The Riserva Regionale Bosco Pantano di Policoro, a coastal wetland and pinewood reserve, is within the coastal plain and nearby. No ski lifts are in the immediate coastal area; ski facilities are in the Appennino Lucano farther inland. The nearest larger town is Policoro, which provides a railway station and local services. The surrounding landscape within about 15 km is coastal plain used mainly for agriculture (olive groves and cultivated fields) and seaside tourism. Matera and its UNESCO Sassi lie well inland and outside the immediate 15 km surroundings.
