This is the inland Salento plain, with flat to lightly undulating farmland of olive groves, vineyards and arable fields. The nearest coast in daily life is the Ionian shore around Torre Lapillo and Porto Cesareo, about 15 km away from the western edge of the area, with long low sandy beaches and coastal dunes. Lecce is the nearest city of size, with a large historic centre and services; Taranto and Brindisi are also practical reference cities. The area is known for wine production, especially Negroamaro and Primitivo, and for olive growing.
