The Tolfa Mountains are the immediate landscape here, with low volcanic and metalliferous hills of pasture, woods and ravines. This area is known for the Maremma-style grazing landscape of the Monti della Tolfa, for horse and cattle breeding, and for deposits of alunite and other minerals that were historically worked in the hills. The nearest substantial town is Civitavecchia on the Tyrrhenian coast, which provides port services, rail links and the main larger-town amenities. Santa Severa and the coast are a short drive away, but the cluster itself is inland in the hill country rather than on the shore. Tolfa is also known for traditional leather work and for the catana folk costume.
