The cluster is in the foothill belt between the Monti della Laga to the west and the lower valleys that open toward the Teramo plain. The Fiume Salinello cuts a marked valley in this area, and the Gole del Salinello with the ruins of Castel Manfrino are within this part of the province. The Monti Gemelli are also close by on the Marche border. Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park lies nearby on the inland side of the province, though not directly on the site. The nearest town of size is Teramo, which has a cathedral, administrative services and the main shopping and rail connections for the area. Campli is known for its preserved historic centre and for the Scala Santa, which has a well-known local religious status.
