The city contains a major commercial port and an Italian naval base on the Mar Grande. The Mar Piccolo supports local fishing and extensive mussel aquaculture (cozze). There are local sandy and rocky bathing stretches on the Ionian coast near the city. Archaeological remains from the Magna Graecia period and the National Archaeological Museum (MArTA) are in the city. Within roughly 15 km the landscape is primarily low-lying coastal plain, urban and industrial fabric, with agricultural hinterland beyond the built-up area.
