Mazara del Vallo is a coastal town on Sicily's southwestern shore on the Strait of Sicily; the Mazaro river runs through the town. The town has an active commercial fishing port and a local fishing fleet, with a history of tuna fishing. The historic centre includes an Arab-influenced 'Kasbah' quarter. The Museo del Satiro in town displays the bronze 'Dancing Satyr' recovered from a local wreck. The surrounding 15 km are a low coastal plain of cultivated land — olive groves, vineyards and citrus orchards — with sandy beaches and small fishing harbours along the nearby coast. Regional centres and airports (Trapani, Palermo) are farther away and reached via the A29 and regional roads.
