The houses sit in the La Maddalena archipelago, an island group of granite islands and small coves off northern Sardinia. The area is inside and around the Parco Nazionale Arcipelago di La Maddalena (a national park established to protect the islands and surrounding sea). Nearby islands within the park include Caprera, Budelli and Spargi; Budelli is known for its pink sand beach and Caprera contains the Casa Museo di Giuseppe Garibaldi. The town has regular ferry links across to Palau on the Sardinian mainland and boat connections around the archipelago; Corsica and the Strait of Bonifacio are close by to the north. The local economy and activities are oriented to boating, sailing, diving and beach tourism; there are small marinas and seasonal tourist services in the islands. The nearest airport on the mainland is Olbia Costa Smeralda (by road and ferry).
