The cluster lies on the Campidano plain at the base of the Sulcis mountains. The Santa Lucia river and the artificial lake of Monte Arcosu are inland from Capoterra, and the lagoon system of the Stagno di Cagliari begins to the east. The Monte Arcosu WWF oasis and the forested hills around it are within this area. The nearest substantial town is Cagliari, with the port, airport, major services and the historic upper districts. Nora at Pula, with Roman ruins on the coast, is nearby but outside the immediate landscape. This part of southern Sardinia is known for broad plains meeting lagoons and low mountain massifs.
