The Secchia runs a few kilometres west of Soliera, and the old course area of the Cassa di espansione del Secchia forms a managed wetland and river-plain reserve within the local landscape. Modena is the nearest city of size, with full services, a historic centre and the cathedral complex listed by UNESCO. The area is known for the farmed plain of the Modenese lowlands and for the food production associated with the province, including Lambrusco and balsamic vinegar.
