Montieri sits on the Colline Metallifere (the Metalliferous Hills), a named belt of wooded, hilly terrain in southern Tuscany. The immediate 15 km area contains historic mining sites and old mine workings from the region's centuries-long metal-extraction activity. The local land cover is a mix of woodland, scrub and small-scale agriculture with scattered medieval hill villages and rural roads. The nearest coast is the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. There are no ski lifts or alpine resorts within the immediate area. Larger service towns reachable from Montieri include Massa Marittima and, further on, Grosseto, which is a regional rail and service centre.
