The cluster is in the built-up area east of Cagliari, so the surroundings are urban fabric rather than open countryside. The Gulf of Cagliari coast is nearby, with the long Poetto beach and the Molentargius-Saline Regional Park within this part of the metropolitan area; the park is a lagoon and former salt-pan landscape known for flamingos. Cagliari is the nearest city of size and has the full range of services, a port, rail connections, a university and an airport in the wider urban area. The Sette Fratelli mountains and forested uplands lie farther inland but outside the immediate 15 km landscape for most of Quartu Sant'Elena.
