The area is close to the Monte Ferru and Sette Fratelli massifs of south-eastern Sardinia, and the inland side of the Sarrabus is known for forest, granite outcrops, old mining sites and reservoirs along the Flumendosa system. Within this part of the former Cagliari province the nearest town of some size is Muravera, which provides the main everyday services for the lower Sarrabus. The wider area is known for citrus around Muravera and for the inland mining and pastoral landscape rather than for a single monument or protected site at Villasalto itself.
