Monte Subasio sits immediately above Assisi and reaches about 1,290 m; the slopes and summit are part of the Parco Regionale del Monte Subasio. The town occupies the eastern slope of Monte Subasio and the immediate landscape descends from limestone hill to the Umbrian plain (Topino/Chiascio valley) with extensive olive groves and agricultural fields. There are no ski lifts on Monte Subasio; the nearest ski areas are in the central Apennines to the south and require roughly an hour or more by car. Perugia is the nearest city of size and provides a university campus, hospitals, long‑distance rail links and cultural institutions. Perugia–San Francesco d'Assisi airport (PEG) sits on the plain between Perugia and Assisi and is within roughly 10–15 km. Assisi’s historic centre and the Basilica of San Francesco are a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the area is a major pilgrimage destination and is known for medieval frescoes. The local economy around Assisi includes olive oil production and building stone from Monte Subasio has been used historically in local architecture.
