This is inland south-central Sicily, with low chalk and clay hills used for grain fields, olive groves and vineyards. The Salso basin is the main geographic frame in this part of the province, though the immediate surroundings are mostly agricultural uplands rather than a marked river landscape. Mazzarino is the nearest historic town of note in the area, with a substantial old centre and castle remains. Gela on the coast is the nearest larger town, with full services, port and rail connections. The area is known above all for cereal farming and broad open interior Sicilian countryside.
