Coastal town on Sicily's southwest coast at the mouth of the Mazaro river on a low-lying coastal plain. The town has a working commercial fishing port with a large local tuna fleet and fish-processing activity. The historic centre includes an Arab-influenced 'Kasbah' quarter. The local archaeological museum displays the bronze 'Dancing Satyr' recovered from the sea off Mazara. The area within about 15 km is flat coastal plain with sandy beaches, agricultural land (olive groves, vineyards, citrus) and small seaside settlements. There are no mountains or ski areas within 15 km; larger centres such as Marsala and Trapani lie farther away.
