This is on the Gulf of Gela coast, with long sandy shoreline and the mouth area of the Gela river nearby. The Biviere di Gela nature reserve lies just outside the town, centred on the coastal lagoon and wetland behind the shore. Gela is itself a sizable town with full services, a port, and a substantial archaeological presence linked to the Greek city, including the museum and ancient remains. The wider surroundings are mostly low coastal plain and cultivated inland countryside.
