The area is in the Sicilian interior between the Madonie and Nebrodi systems, with cultivated hills, wheat fields and wooded patches around the upper Imera basin. The northern edge of the province here is close to the Madonie Regional Natural Park, whose higher limestone massifs lie within roughly 15 km to the north-east. The main larger town in daily orbit is Petralia Sottana, which has services and is one of the gateways to the Madonie. The nearest ski area is Piano Battaglia in the Madonie, around 45-60 minutes by road depending on the exact starting point. This part of inland Sicily is known for grain farming, grazing and hill villages set on ridges.
