The cluster sits in the Volturno plain on the river by name, with the Monti Tifatini and the first inland ridges visible to the south and east. The Volturno runs through Capua and is the main natural feature within the immediate area. Capua is a small town of some size with a historic centre, the cathedral, and the remains of its medieval river-gate setting; nearby Santa Maria Capua Vetere has the Roman amphitheatre and other archaeological remains of ancient Capua. The Reggia di Caserta is in the wider area around Caserta but outside the immediate 15 km landscape. This part of northern Campania is known for fertile agricultural land on the plain and for the concentration of Roman and Bourbon historical sites around Capua and Caserta.
