Monte Maggiore and the Monti Trebulani rise a few kilometres north of Pignataro Maggiore, with low limestone ridges and woodland marking the landscape on that side. The Volturno plain lies to the south, and the Volturno river runs through this part of Caserta province. The nearest larger town is Capua, with a substantial historic centre and Roman remains; Caserta is the main city of the province and has the Royal Palace, but it is farther out and does not define the immediate landscape. This part of inland northern Campania is known for mixed farmland on the plain and lower hills, with small centres between the Capua plain and the first inland ranges.
