This is inland hill country on the Hyblaean plateau, with a mosaic of cereal fields, pasture and valleys cut into the limestone tableland. The area is associated with the upper Dirillo valley and with the rural landscapes of south-eastern Sicily rather than with a single major natural landmark. Caltagirone is the nearest town of size; it has a substantial historic centre, rail links and services, and its historic centre is on the UNESCO list within the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. Vizzini is known above all for its connection with Giovanni Verga and for the agricultural interior of the Hyblaean area.
