Mount Etna is the dominant landscape feature here, and Maletto sits on its north-western side in the lava country around the volcano. The Simeto river rises in this area, and the upper Simeto valley is part of the local landscape. The Parco dell'Etna lies on the volcano, with protected lava fields, woods and cultivated slopes nearby. The nearest ski lifts are on Etna around Piano Provenzana and Rifugio Sapienza, reached by a mountain drive of roughly an hour or a little more depending on conditions. Randazzo is the nearest town of size, with a substantial historic centre in lava stone and rail connections; Adrano and Paternò are the larger service towns farther down the western side of Etna. The area is known for volcanic soils and cultivation on Etna's inland slopes, including Maletto's strawberries.
