Mount Etna rises immediately to the north, and the Simeto River runs by Paternò. The cluster lies in the broad cultivated plain at the western edge of the Catania plain, with Etna dominating the skyline rather than inside the built-up mountain belt. The Parco dell'Etna begins farther up the volcano and is not in the immediate plain around the town. The nearest town of major size is Catania, with a full city range of services, rail links, port and airport. Paternò is known locally for its Norman castle on the hill above the town and for citrus and other agriculture of the Simeto plain.
