Mount Etna rises inland from this stretch of coast, and the lower eastern slopes are within the local area. The Ionian coast is nearby, with the Riviera dei Ciclopi around Aci Trezza and Aci Castello just to the south. The Timpa di Acireale is a coastal nature reserve with a lava escarpment above the sea. Catania is the nearest large city, with a full range of services, rail links and the airport. This part of eastern Sicily is known for Etna landscapes, citrus cultivation and baroque town centres rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake.
