Mount Etna is immediately to the east and northeast, and Adrano sits on the southwestern side of the volcano on the Simeto valley edge. The Simeto river runs through this part of inland Catania province. The Parco dell'Etna begins on the mountain above the built area. The nearest ski lifts are on Etna around Rifugio Sapienza, roughly an hour by road depending on conditions. Catania is the nearest large city, with the airport, port, university and major services. Adrano has a Norman castle and an old centre, and this side of Etna is known for lava landscapes, pistachios and other Etna foothill agriculture.
