Mount Etna is within the 15 km radius, with the southern Etna slopes and lava landscapes immediately above the town. The Monte Gorna and Monti Rossi volcanic cones are nearby on the Etna side. The Parco dell'Etna covers the mountain above the built-up belt. The nearest ski lifts are those on Etna south around Rifugio Sapienza, roughly a 30-40 minute drive depending on road conditions. Catania is the nearest large city and provides the full range of city services, rail links and the main airport for eastern Sicily. The area is known for vineyards, pistachios, orchards and villages built with Etna stone on the volcano's lower slopes.
