The cluster is in the Sila Piccola, the southern Apennine uplands between the Amato and Corace headwaters. Lake Ampollino and the larger Sila lakes are outside the 15 km radius, but the local setting is still wooded mountain country with chestnut and beech forest and higher pasture around the Villaggio Mancuso and Tirivolo area. Part of the nearby upland falls in Sila National Park, whose southwestern sectors are reached around Villaggio Mancuso. The nearest ski lifts are the small lifts at Villaggio Palumbo on Lake Ampollino, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by road, so they are not a local landscape feature. The nearest town of some size is Soveria Mannelli, which has everyday services and a station on the Cosenza–Catanzaro line. Tiriolo, to the south, is known for its ridge position between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian sides of Calabria.
