The Ampollino area and the lakes of the Sila are not in the immediate 15 km radius, but the local setting is still mountain forest and upland valleys. Much of the surrounding area falls within Sila National Park. The nearest ski area is Villaggio Palumbo on the Sila, roughly an hour by road. The nearest town of size is Catanzaro, which has the main services and rail connections for this part of the province. Taverna is known for Mattia Preti, who was born here, and for its position on the road up into the Sila forests.
