The cluster is in the built-up area of Catanzaro, so the lived setting is an urban ridge and valley landscape rather than open countryside. The city stands between the valleys of the Fiumarella and the Corace, with the Gulf of Squillace on the Ionian side about 10 km away. The Sila plateau rises inland to the north, but it is outside the immediate 15 km landscape. Catanzaro is the provincial capital and has the full services of a medium-sized city, including hospitals, schools, university facilities and major road links. The area is known in practical terms for its administrative role and for the narrow isthmus of Calabria between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian sides.
