This cluster is in the built-up area of Catanzaro, on the hills above the Gulf of Squillace on the Ionian side of Calabria. The area is cut by deep ravines and short valleys that run down toward the coast. The Sila range is farther inland and forms the mountain backdrop for the province, but it is not within the immediate 15 km landscape here. Catanzaro is the provincial capital and has the full set of city services, administrative offices, shops, schools and hospitals. The historic core stands on a ridge, and the city is known for its position between hilltop districts and the coastal quarter of Catanzaro Lido. The coast at Catanzaro Lido is within the local area, with urban beaches on the Gulf of Squillace.
