The Maiella massif rises immediately above the area, with the Maiella National Park starting nearby on the mountain side of Guardiagrele. Guardiagrele sits on the eastern foothills of the Maiella over the Foro valley. The nearest ski lifts are at Passolanciano on the Maiella, roughly a 25–35 minute drive. Chieti is the nearest larger town, with full services and rail links, and Pescara is the main city for airport and wider shopping. Guardiagrele is known in Abruzzo for metalworking and goldsmith craft, and its historic centre is a recognised destination within the Maiella foothill towns.
