Maiella National Park begins inland, with the nearest access around Guardiagrele and the eastern foothills; the mountain is a constant presence from this part of Chieti province. The nearest larger town is Chieti, which has a substantial historic centre, services and Roman remains, and Pescara is the main city of the area for rail, airport and shopping.
