Trilocale in Palena

The Maiella massif is within the 15 km radius, with the eastern edge of the Maiella National Park around the town and the mountain basin of Palena opening toward the Aventino valley. The Aventino river runs through this part of the valley. Passo della Forchetta and the mountain roads above the town lead into the high Maiella; the nearest ski area is at Roccaraso, roughly an hour by road, which is outside the immediate landscape. Castel di Sangro is the nearest larger town of note inland, while toward the coast the Sangro valley leads to Lanciano. This area is known for mountain villages, transhumance routes, and access to the eastern side of the Maiella.
