The Maiella massif rises to the west, with the eastern foothills and limestone valleys within this area. The Aventino valley is nearby, and the Sangro valley is also close in this part of inland Chieti. The Maiella National Park begins a short distance inland and is the main protected landscape affecting this area. The nearest ski lifts are on the Passolanciano-Majelletta side of the Maiella, roughly an hour by road. The nearest larger town is Lanciano, which has a substantial historic centre, services, and rail links toward the coast. This part of Abruzzo is known for hill villages, pastoral mountain country, and olive groves and vineyards on the lower slopes.
